Jyväskylä's English-language programmes attract applicants

The popularity of Jyväskylä's English-language programmes continues to be strong. The first joint application round for foreign-language programmes ended on 17 January. The number of applicants to the University of Jyväskylä's international master's degree programmes increased by 84%. At Jamk, one starting place was sought by several dozen times as many applicants.

A total of 10 861 applications were submitted to the University of Jyväskylä during the application period 3-17 January 2024. The 8 586 applicants competed for a total of 372 places in 18 different Master's programmes. One applicant can apply to more than one programme. Compared to last year, the number of applicants increased by 84% and the number of applications by 80%. In 2023, there were 4662 applicants and 6023 applications. 

A total of 18 216 applications were submitted to Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences between 3 and 17 January 2024. The popularity of English-language degree programmes at Jamk has been growing in recent years. The peak year was a year ago, when more than 20 000 applications were submitted. This year's total number of applications is still remarkably high compared to years before the interest rate pandemic, for example.

AI, business and gaming are the favourite fields for applicants

In terms of application numbers, Artificial Intelligence in the Faculty of Information Technology emerged as the most popular university subject with 1,598 applications. International Business and Entrepreneurship and Banking and International Finance attracted 1422 and 1227 applications respectively. The number of applicants increased in all the old destinations and the three new Master's programmes attracted more than 200 applicants each.

Once again this year, Jamk's most popular bachelor's degree programme was Business Information Technology focusing on the games industry. At Master's level, applicants were attracted by artificial intelligence: the Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics programme attracted around 50 applications per place.

The university's international master's degree programmes are available to both Finnish and foreign applicants. The applicants came from 116 different countries of which the largest is Pakistan with 2,650 applicants. The number of applicants outside the EU/EEA countries was 8,062. There were 8,062 applicants from outside the EU/EEA. 

Each year, more than 1000 foreign students study at the University of Jyväskylä, of whom about 250 study in English-language Master's programmes and the rest in doctoral programmes or as exchange students. 

The first joint call for applications will continue with selection tests and the results will be announced by 31 May at the latest.
