We are going to celebrate the Finnish-Japanese Friendship Year in 2022. As a part of the anniversary celebration, a photo touring exhibition with the theme of friendship between Finnish and Japanese people will be displayed at the Museum of Central Finland from 06.10 to 06.11. Also, four calligraphy workshops are organized as a side program of the exhibition.

The bicycle parking in the center of Jyväskylä will be cleaned in October

The Jyväskylä's bike parking will open more space for active bicycle users in the city. Jyväskylä center bycicle parking area will be cleaned of wrecked bikes starting Thursday, 13.10. If your bike has been left in the bike parking for a long time, now is the best time to take it home!

The cleaning operation proceeds in three stages every week. Wednesday 28.09. the bicycle drivers who use the parking were photographed.

Construction of the City of Light event has started

Construction of the City of Light installations and ambient lighting has started on Monday 26 September. Some of the artists from abroad have already arrived in Jyväskylä over the weekend and were able to check out the sites of their installations well on time.

The event starts on Thursday 29th September at 20.00, when Jyväskylä will be illuminated with spectacular light artworks and special lighting.

The women-only swimming session is again organized every month in Vaajakoski Wellamo swimming hall

The women-only swimming shift is being organized by City of Jyväskylä sports services as a part of the NytLiikkelle service package. The session is set every month at the Wellamo swimming hall in Vaajakoski, Jyväskylä.

The women's shift for the 2022–2023 season is organized once a month on Fridays from 18:00 to 20:30.

Jyväskylä’s community centres start the autumn in a happy mood

The Kortteli Club and the Piippuranta Club have re-opened in August, after the summer break. Several volunteer-run groups have already started meeting, and from the beginning of September, local community centres will be buzzing again. As usual, open and free activities for all ages are organised on weekdays.

The Olympic champion Matti Nykänen’s memorial Höyhen (‘Feather’) will be unveiled on 7 September 2022 at 3:00 pm in Jyväskylä at a public unveiling ceremony. The memorial is located in Hippos Sports Park on the shore of Köyhälampi pond, address: Rautpohjankatu 6, 40700 Jyväskylä.

Finland’s Susijengi, the Lauri Markkanen homecoming, and amity across borders

For the first time in 34 years, Jyväskylä will host a men’s basketball national team game. Finland’s national team, Susijengi, faces Ukraine at LähiTapiola Areena on Thursday, August 18, as they gear up for EuroBasket 2022. This will also be the first national team game for Lauri Markkanen, the premier star of Finnish basketball, in his hometown.

Jyväskylä, the Capital of sport, to become the main driver of the European Erasmus+Sport cooperation

The capital of sport, Jyväskylä, is building an international co-operation network with Umeå and Tartu, as well as the regional sports clubs, with the aim of supporting young people's physical activity in the target areas. The pilot project, funded by the European Union and coordinated by the City of Jyväskylä, will start in January 2021.

Two new self-service libraries launched in Jyväskylä, age restrictions lifted

Palokan ja Vaajakosken aluekirjastojen aukioloajat laajenevat merkittävästi maanantaista 3.2.2020 alkaen. Kirjastot ovat avoinna omatoimikirjastoina varsinaisten palveluaikojen ulkopuolella aamuisin, iltaisin, viikonloppuisin ja pyhinä. Myös omatoimikirjastoaikojen ikäraja on poistunut.

The libraries in Palokka and Vaajakoski will operate extended opening hours from Monday, 3 February 2020.
