Jyväskylä Sinfonia brings a timeless masterpiece to Taulumäki Church as Georg Friedrich Handel’s Messiah is performed in collaboration with Ensemble Nylandia and the Musica Choir. This oratorio – one of the most famous and beloved works of the Baroque era – will fill the church with music that has moved audiences for nearly three centuries.

The concert will be conducted by maestro Matias Häkkinen, renowned for his subtle interpretation of Baroque style and expression. The soloists include internationally acclaimed artists: soprano Emma Kajander, alto Katariina Heikkilä, tenor Aaron Godfrey-Mayes, and bass Luke Terence Scott. The Musica Choir has been coached by Marjukka Manner.

Messiah is neither an opera nor liturgical church music, but a dramatic and spiritual work in which the texts of the Bible come alive through music. The piece guides the listener from prophecies and anticipation to the birth of Christ, His suffering, and ultimately the message of resurrection and hope. Its most famous choral movement, Hallelujah, is one of the most iconic moments in Western music history, but the work’s power also lies in its many delicate arias and the expressive storytelling of the choir.

The acoustics and intimate atmosphere of Taulumäki Church provide a natural setting for Messiah, allowing the interplay between orchestra, choir, and soloists to shine. The concert is organized in collaboration with the Jyväskylä Parish.

The performance will take place at Taulumäki Church on Thursday 16.4. at 18 and is expected to conclude around 21.
