Outi Tarkiainen: Polar Pearls
Ville Matvejeff: Crossroads
Joel Järventausta: Naava
Aulis Sallinen: Chamber Music III ’The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixote’
It's been 80 years since the founding of The Society of Finnish Composers! In 1945, the Finnish composers’ profession finally gained its own institution, and the association’s first honorary member was, quite naturally, Jean Sibelius himself – without whom the entire profession in Finland would likely be far more impoverished. “Every individual success ultimately benefits the whole profession,” as Aulis Sallinen has said.
Now 90 years old himself, Sallinen is among the last who still remember the era of Sibelius. He also stands as one of the most towering totems and uncompromising seekers of truth in our more recent musical history.
But this anniversary is no stiff celebration: in one of his best-known works, Sallinen dives headfirst into the wild adventures of the eccentric fantasy-hybrid Don Juanquixote. From the younger generation of our composers, Outi Tarkiainen and Joel Järventausta lead us into the wonders of the arctic wilderness, while our former chief conductor Ville Matvejeff ventures boldly along the glittering borderline between classical music and heavy metal. Together with cellist Tuomas Lehto, they remind us of the incredible wealth of Finnish musical artistry!
At the concert, Jyväskylä Sinfonia and Alba Records will also release their latest album, featuring works by Ville Matvejeff and Joel Järventausta.
