Gaetano Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor

A rare treat awaits opera lovers in Jyväskylä at the turn of the year! The romantic opera masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor is a seldom-seen gem on Finnish stages.

First performed in Naples in 1835, Lucia di Lammermoor showcases the virtuosic vocal technique of bel canto – "beautiful singing." The opera is renowned for its soaring melodies and, in particular, Lucia’s famous mad scene, which stands as one of the most masterful showcases in operatic art.

The production also features other magnificent musical moments, such as the moving sextet that concludes Act II. This emotionally charged ensemble scene, in which the soloists simultaneously express different emotions as the chorus joins in, is considered one of Donizetti’s most powerful creations.

The Jyväskylä production of Lucia brings together a stellar international team. The cast includes Kaisa Ranta (Lucia), Waltteri Torikka (Enrico), Aljaž Farasin (Edgardo), Petri Lindroos (Raimondo), Tuomas Miettola (Arturo and Normanno), and Ena Pongrac (Alisa). The opera is directed by Vilppu Kiljunen. Jyväskylä Sinfonia is conducted by Alberto Hold-Garrido, and the opera chorus is coached by Rita Varonen.

This tragic love story is based on the novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. Set in 17th-century Scotland, the tale centers on a bitter feud between two families and a forbidden romance.

The opera is performed in Italian with Finnish surtitles.
