Robert Schumann: Violin Concerto
Nico Muhly: Eager Music
W. A. Mozart: Symphony No. 38 “Prague”
Robert Schumann composed one of his last works, a violin concerto, which he never managed to bring to public light himself. Those friends who first saw it judged it a failure. While Schumann’s piano and cello concertos earned fame and acclaim, the violin concerto lay forgotten for many years. Time has now revealed that such judgment was completely undeserved: contemporaries simply could not grasp the work’s nuanced sensitivity, expressive depth, and the bold new vistas it opens. Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, the concerto takes flight under the hands of our internationally acclaimed violin star Elina Vähälä.
Another eagerly awaited returnee is Atte Kilpeläinen, violist of the Meta4 Quartet, who also explores two extremes of hyper-speed: Mozart, who allegedly composed one of his most beloved and foolproof symphonies in Prague in just a few days, and Nico Muhly, who deliberately turbocharged his Introit to overflow with musical ideas. Which will ultimately ignite the spring’s excitement more – speed or charm?
