Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä

Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä’s way of interpreting music has been defined as comprehensive, exemplified by the colourful repertoire and the authentic interest towards music. The history of the orchestra, founded in 1955, has seen various stages, among them phases as a private organization and as a communal unit. The orchestra has operated in its present form since 1965.
Frenchman Patrick Gallois has been the Music Director of the orchestra since 2003 and leads a group of 38 musicians with a unique style. Gallois, also an internationally recognised flautist, has followed the example of his predecessors and has taken the orchestra on many tours abroad. During the last years, the orchestra has performed for example in Japan, France, Spain, Poland and Norway.
Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä has recorded extensively and has released music for some of the largest classical music publishing companies, among others for Naxos. These include for instance a series of the early symphonies by Joseph Haydn, Franz and Karl Doppler's flute music as well as Louis Spohr's violin concertos, performed by Simone Lamsma.
The orchestra has also made a platinum-selling recording together with the luminous opera star Karita Mattila. The more recent releases include Friedrich Witt 's music (2010), Saint-Saëns Violin Concertos (2010), and American overtures from the 18th century (2011). For the full discography, please see the Recordings-section.
In spite of the orchestra’s activity in the international arena Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä also gives concerts regularly in the local environment. Another example of the orchestra’s local activity is the project of education and audience development targeted at schools around Central Finland since 1993.
